Windows rarely fail all at once. They get harder to open, foggier to look through, and more expensive to live with, a little at a time. Here are six signs your windows are asking to be replaced.
1. Foggy or cloudy glass
Moisture trapped between the panes means the seal on a double-pane window has failed. Once that happens the insulating value is gone, and no amount of cleaning brings the view back. Sometimes this is a glass repair, sometimes a new window. We can tell you which.
2. Drafts you can feel
If you can feel air moving near a closed window, or a candle flickers next to it, the seal and weatherstripping have given out. Those drafts are conditioned air leaking straight out of the house.
3. Windows that stick or will not stay up
A sash that fights you, or one that drops shut on its own, usually means worn balances and hardware. It is a daily annoyance and, in an emergency, a safety problem.
4. Rising heating and cooling bills
St. Louis swings from humid summers to cold winters, and leaky windows make your furnace and AC fight the weather all year. A jump in your bills with no other explanation often traces back to the windows.
5. Outside noise indoors
Modern insulated windows quiet a room as a side benefit of sealing it. If the street feels like it is in the living room, your windows are letting more than sound through.
6. Rot, peeling, or constant repainting
Old wood frames that rot or need repainting every few years are telling you the maintenance is no longer worth it. Vinyl replacements end that cycle for good.
